Reader Q&A: Hangover Wines

Why do some wines make me more hung over than others?

Great question.  The first (and less obvious) answer to this question is that if you have a few glasses of "some" wines followed by a bottle of "other" wine, chances are it's a question of quantity, not quality.

But the real question is a good one.  How come I can drink three glasses of one wine and be fine, but have two of another and feel like crap?

It boils down to quality.  Quality and residual sugar.

There's more to this than I'm qualified to address, but letting a lack of expertise get in the way of giving advice is no fun at all.  Rather than regurgitate something that we've already covered, check out this piece on protecting your loved ones from hangovers

Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's a more scientific explanation to all this.  Maybe we'll get to it, and maybe - just maybe - someone will chime in with some comments that shed a more credible light on this very serious question.

Cheers.  Hope you feel better soon.

  1. WTF does "quality" mean in this context? Seems pretty vague.

  2. Sean,

Thanks for your question. I was kind of hoping someone else would do the research for a change. I'm trying to take a vacation here, pal.

PS- That's an invite to you, in case you didn't pick up on that.
